Abigail and her
best friend Sienna |
Abigail came to us at three
years old after going through a number of homes. She was labeled a biter
and was misrepresented as a one year old male to the last owner. When
the owner found out she was an older female who bit, they no longer
wanted her. She also had accidents all over the house. We took her in
with the intention of working with her to correct her behavior issues
and then find her a forever home.
Her 'biting' issue was simply
Abigail's misunderstanding of how to take food from a hand. She was used to
people dropping the food when she snapped at it. Within a week, she had
learned to take food gently from fingers. However, it took her years to
stop pouncing at the food before then leaning over to gently take the
food. She had just never been trained.

The elderly
Abigail with
two young friends |
The problem with her having accidents in the house was actually a
medical condition. Because it had gone untreated for so long, it took
nearly a year of medication to correct the problem. After that, she
never had another accident as long as she lived.
After the year that it took
to correct all her issues, I realized that Abigail and my other skunk,
Sienna, had bonded. Due to Abigail's earlier treatment, she was never
able to bond to humans. So it didn't seem fair to separate her from her
only real friend. Sienna. At that point, the decision was made to keep her
here with us. We just lost her recently in the fall of 2005.
She was a good girl who was
simply misunderstood in her early years.
