Maia had been a breeder mink on a farm. She lived in
utter filth, frequently with no food and water. For fun, the keeper
enjoyed shocking the mink with a cattle prod. (Note: This is NOT typical
treatment of ranch mink.)
Maia was rescued by someone who was at the farm looking to buy a baby.
Maia was no longer useful for breeding and was supposed to be pelted out
that fall. When I met her, she was unhandlable and wanted to bite anyone
she could reach. But I fell in love with her and offered to give her a
home for the rest of her life.
After working with her intensely, I was able to get her out of her cage
to run in just a few months. She learned that humans were not all mean
and learned to play. She became best friends with Ginger, my raccoon and
the two would race up and down the hall playing cat and mouse, reversing
roles at the end of the hall so they could chase each other back the
other way. Before her death, I could pet her safely and she would roll
on her back and talk to me. My raccoon was inconsolable when Maia died
suddenly one day. |
